The immense joy about childbirth, especially as a new mother, is seeing your newborn baby open their eyes, make eye contact, but it does not happen instantly. So, do not let it bother you right away. The vision of a newborn baby takes time to develop. During the first week, a baby does not see much detail. A baby’s first view is not clear, and it is mostly in shades of gray.

It takes months before an infant’s vision develops into full eyesight. As a parent, it is essential to know your baby’s vision stages of development. This will help you ensure that your child’s vision manifests fully. Through this, a child can enjoy the world without having any issues. Let’s discuss how you can develop your baby vision:

Put on a light in your baby’s room.

During the first month of babies, they only focus between 8 and 12 inches from their faces. During this time, your baby often responds to movement. So, it is best to expose your baby to light in the daytime and little light at night. This does not only help; it sharpens the baby’s focus on things around, and majorly, around you as the parent. These are steps on how you can use a light:

  • Put on a dim lamp or nightlight in your baby’s room. The ideal way to discover if the nightlight is dim enough in your baby’s room is that your eyelid cannot see the light.
  • Use amber or red to keep the melatonin production going smoothly.

Change your baby’s position frequently.

Both eyes of your baby will develop at their own pace. However, when you are working on your child’s vision, ensure to stimulate the eyes equally. You can do this by changing your baby’s position when carrying him or her on your arms or a crib regularly.

How to Change Position:

  • Change the crib position regularly, including where the baby is staying in it.
  • Change sides when feeding or holding your baby.

Keep objects within your baby’s vision.

The best way to interact with your baby is to show them toys or talk to the baby when carrying him or her. In the first four months, the baby will get used to following you and the objects you’ve shown him or her immediately the child starts moving. For the baby to have a sharp focus, make sure the object is 8-12 inches within sight.

  • When walking around the room, talk to your baby often. It will develop their ability as they grow.
  • Bold geometric patterns pattern and color toys should be used when working on their vision. Although babies do not develop color vision until they are four months old, bold colors like yellow, orange, red, white, and black aids enhance the vision of the baby.

Be attentive to notice any signs of trouble.

Babies can exhibit problems at any age, and that is also inclusive of their eyesight potential issues. Once you notice your baby is showing any signs that seem problematic, seek medical attention immediately. These signs often occur at birth till they are 2years of age. The following should be observed:

  • If your baby cannot track an object during their third or fourth month
  • If the baby experiences inconvenience in moving one or both eyes in any directions
  • White pupils
  • Watery eyes
  • Light sensitivity, e.g., closing eyes, blinking, showing light distress, and many more.
  • Crossed eyes
  • Jiggling eyes that are not stable

A baby’s vision is one of the essential factors that influence their growth. If a baby can quickly sight things, it helps the child retentive memory. As an intending parent, ensure you observe your baby’s vision as he or she begins to open eyes to see the worldview.
